World Creativity and Innovation Week (WCID) begins on Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday – April 15 – and continues to World Creativity and Innovation Day, April 21, every year.

WCID and WCIW is a do-ocracy, a DIY (do it yourself) celebration. You create ways to honour creativeness in your home, your school, your community, your business, with your customers – to make the world a better place and to make your place in the world better too.

Since 2001 WCIW has grown to be observed in over 50 countries by businesses, communities, associations, schools, and families.

Since its birth in Canada in 2001, World Creativity and Innovation Day, April 21 and World Creativity and Innovation Week April 15-21 have grown to be celebrated in over 100 communities, schools, businesses and homes in 50+ countries.

Example celebrations

Business and Government
  • NASA, Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, and Disney, for example, highlight ways to use creativity and creative thinking for internal and customer innovation.
  • PHD Canada and other marketing agencies invite staff to decorate their offices and engage in activities to loosen their thinking to get new ideas.
  • Dutch civil servants walk outside and talk about ways to bring more creative thinking to their work
  • Municipalities, provinces and states announce their innovation accomplishments and agendas
Education
  • Students create projects that support their autonomy and creative choice.
  • American University held creative thinking and related courses for the week for students and the off-campus community
  • University students in Michigan are challenged to bring the topic to life on their business campus.
Community
  • Friends share events that are totally new to them – like arranging to have potluck dinners using dishes they’ve never made before, or going to a new restaurant, or seeing a film they normally might not.
World Creativity and Innovation Day, Aprl 21 and Week, April 15-21 happen where you are.  It’s grassroots.

  1. YES! Great idea! Coincides with Leonardo’s Birthday, I ahve read. His was a life-time of multidimensional creativity worth celebrating !! Thanks. Posted on my Facebook…… and will spread the word…… . We need to focus on creativity to enrich all lives: the life of s/he who creates and those who benefit from those creative efforts !!!
